What is Ketamine Therapy?

Ketamine is a unique medication that has been used safely in medicine since the 1970s. It is classified as a dissociative anesthetic and for the last 50 years has been used as one of the safest and most effective anesthetic agents in children, adults and the elderly. Compelling research starting in the 1990s has demonstrated that smaller, non-anesthetic doses of ketamine rapidly relieve the symptoms of severe depression, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD, usually within an hour. In May 2020, the FDA approved a ketamine based nasal spray to help fight treatment-resistant depression.

"The rapid antidepressant effects of ketamine in patients with severe, chronic, and treatment-resistant forms of this illness [depression] may represent a true medical breakthrough,"

James Murrough, director of the mood and anxiety disorders program and an associate professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine.

The hallmark of many of these disorders is chemical imbalances within the brain associated with aberrant or abnormal chemical pathways.  Ketamine interacts with certain NMDA receptors in the brain that allows for restoration of healthy levels of these good chemicals, and the normalization of chemical pathways.

The result is the increased neuroplasticity that allows for the reestablishment of neurochemical balance and restoration of normal mood and the cessation of ruminating thoughts. Ketamine also causes the perception of a dream-like state in which patients describe the ability to separate themselves from their negative internal psychological and emotional experience.  Ketamine works as a restorative reset button for the body and mind.

In the case of chronic pain syndromes, ketamine’s unique mechanism of action at the NMDA receptors helps to "rewire" and downplay inappropriate pain signals giving the patient significant, lasting relief.

In my 26-year career in the military, the deaths that I’ve seen from pain management have been from opioids. I often say, if only the drug in that machine had been ketamine, those people would be alive today.

"Elysian Wellness is a godsend for me.   I struggled for years with anxiety & depression; the past 1-1/2 years I had not been able to sleep without medication.  When I did not have the medication I had gone as long as 54 hours straight without sleep due to anxiety I did not understand or could control.   After the 2nd infusion I slept through the night without being medicated.  That continues to this day; I just recently completed my 6th infusion.   My mood has markedly improved.   I really feel like Ketamine has been “a great reset” for my brain as I’m changing habitual responses & behavior patterns to daily stressors that previously were detrimental to my peace of mind and affected my relationship with others in detrimental manner."
